The Birds In The Backyard Tell Me When The Sun Rises
Van der Putten’s practice involves walking, listening, and vocalizing in relation to the landscape around her. Her sessions observing the transition between night and day were recorded in photography, writings, mapping and sound. This became an extensive archive, forming the project ‘All Begins With A: inspired by the SUNRISE’, 2012 – 2015.
‘The Birds In The Backyard Tell Me When The Sun Rises’, 2013, audio (stereo, 7’56”) is a composition resulting from this process. It was made during the first edition of the project, between November 2012 and April 2013. Here Van der Putten encircled a graveyard, close to her home. Five field recordings, made during her daily vocal training at sunrise, are superimposed. This creates a (dis)harmonic sound field.
